Curly, The (original) Green Poodle...
In the Summer of 2000, I was in Texas visiting my parents and trying to make headway on my dissertation. During that time, I decided I wanted a small dog. Up until then, I had had a variety of pets, all of which were fascinating yet somehow lacking. I remember sitting in the College Station Barnes and Noble store paging through the big AKC encyclopedia of dog breeds looking for just the right one. I decided on Toy Poodle for their size, intelligence, loyalty, non-shedding coats, and of course cuteness.
Later that summer I read an ad in the Fort Worth paper classifieds for a "green and white tiny toy poodle." Of course, I had to go see this puppy. And, I brought him home.
For the next 16 years, Curly and I shared our lives. There were ups and downs, as with any relationship. I had to learn how to be the right companion for such an intelligent creature. Curly learned obedience and agility. Too bad I couldn't keep up with him. But we did have fun. And when the time came that his cataracts and his seizures kept him from enjoying life, I had him put down.
